Poetry || SubmissionsFour poems by Ward KelleyTruth FadesYou must not ensnare yourself into believingtruth -- as we perceive it -- is greater than eternity, for the very nature of everlasting is that nothing exactly does. This is most true for truth. You need the slave in the chariot who whispers, 'Remember, that you are human,' whenever you celebrate your own Triumph of awareness. Remember, your realization will not be true a thousand years from now; this truth you have found, whether love or hate, history will all eventually make wrong. It’s a matter for time: mountains always erode, and are replaced by seas. But souls always cavort onward; they have a great respect for truth, and the pursuit of it, although not because truth is true, but rather it always fades into another truth, the same as lives into others. Another Clever ManualI require my death, only I don’t requirethe admission of this. I always think to run, and most writing aspires to this topic of running away, so there are many clever manuals on how to hide. You will never leave me alone, will you? Not until I learn to love you; but I am not inclined to love what my body hates. My body does not require a death, nor does it seek such an admission. Some day I will write of signaling. I want to learn how to raise my hand, maybe wave it back and forth: here I am . . . I’m over here . . . then pull my hand quickly down. Hands Go Up, the Back ArchesWe are in a race that speed cannot win;the title will not go to the swiftest of limb or mind. This race does not measure bodies, or even minds; instead it is a trial that sifts grace from fear. Money is usually a form of fear, although it can exhibit great grace if wielded properly. Love can grow from fear or grace; to determine which, ask if it could ever turn to hate. We are in a race we should not win. The one in front crosses the finish line, the hands go up, high about the head, the back arches, the legs slow . . . like an infantryman when shot in the spine . . . the rifle falls to the earth. Pumping, PumpingWe need to love, just as weneed to hate. These hands of ours crave dramatic use. We need to gather, just as we need to set free. Our arms are strong, but strongest when they release. We need to run, sometimes towards, sometimes away; indeed most writing is a form of running away, although somewhere deep inside all these words is a keen destination, if only we could recognize it as our legs go pumping, pumping. Ward Kelley says he is "a 52 year old business executive with 3,600 people in the division reporting to me. I only mention this because in a sense the daimon that propels my occupation also propels my poetry. For instance, Gertrude Stein once said, 'If Mr. Robert Frost is at all good as a poet, it is because he is a farmer -- really in his mind a farmer, I mean.' So in my mind am I a businessman who writes poetry, or a very minor poet successful at business? Who knows? Yet I tread carefully with this balance for fear my daimon will leave me, or my greed will taunt me for decades.' Ward is also a two-time Pushcart Prize nominee whose publication credits include such journals as: Plainsongs, Another Chicago Magazine, Rattle, Midstream, Zuzu’s Petals, Ginger Hill, Sunstone, Pif, Whetstone, Melic Review, Ariga, Thunder Sandwich, Potpourri and Skylark. He was the recipient of the Nassau Review Poetry Award for 2001. Kelley is the author of two paperbacks: 'histories of souls,' a poetry collection, and 'Divine Murder,' a novel; he also has an epic poem, 'comedy incarnate' on CD and CD ROM.
