Poetry || SubmissionsFall, New EnglandDorrit O'Leary Late Septemberis orange, mauve and sand blackeyed susans star in fields asters ray purple fireweed fiercely flowers on highways goldenrod surfs higher grass, plumed, marches delicate wheat October slips into its time Crows constantly caw Bellhops in an aging summer hotel Dorrit O'Leary (1913-1986) was a Massachusetts poet who inspired many generations of writers who went through the Newton school system, enjoying her teaching, her understanding, and her friendship for the brief years they knew her. I, for one, will never forget that she was the first teacher who encouraged me to listen for my own voice. This poem, Fall, New England, is from a book called Scrambling the Stones, made possible by a grant from the Massachusetts Humanities council and friends of the family.
