Suicide bomb at the Carmel Shuk
by Lois Michal Unger
I don’t buy from that cheese counter I said
as if that would assure my life
and anyway
I did not buy cheese that morning
I bought
lettuce
and tomatoes
and saccharine
and oh yes
I tried on boots
they were size 41
and the man said
get them
even though I wear 39
the blast occurred
an hour later
a suicide bomber
age 16
blew himself up
and three people
buying cheese
or vegetables
or olives
Sometimes we left doors open
Sometimes we left doors open
and thieves wandered in
in black at the foot of my bed
I scream -
he’s wearing Larry's kippa
next time I don't awake
tongue stuck in mouth scream
he came out of your bedroom Larry said
and took my father's watch.
in the photographer's studio
in the photographer's studio
I'm bathed with light
I wear more clothes or less clothes
later I become religious
my family complains about my clothes
it's afternoon
my husband focuses his camera
my back hurts
outside hammer sounds
air blowing thru the window
sways the curtains.
It's winter and I'm trying to keep warm in Tel Aviv.
I've published six books of poems.
I like pretty flowers and warm coffee.
