Five Poems by Charles Kormos

Apologies

We have come here
to sincerely apologize,
solemnly apologize
for the sins and crimes
committed before our time
by our fathers and grandfathers.

Our laudable example also calls
on our children and grandchildren
to solemnly and sincerely apologize
for the sins and crimes
committed before their time
by their fathers and grandfathers.

The News

Every hour
on the hour
the news bulletins start
with today's victims,
followed by the burials
of yesterday's.

Next come the anniversaries
of ancient tragedies
and the misdeeds
of our traditional enemies.

Everybody is against us.
We stand alone,
but nothing shall stop us
from fighting each other
tooth and nail
for money, position and power.

Monday

The wasted years and women loved,
they failed to teach him what and how,
when to advance or just stand still.

When to retreat, he thinks he knows,
and then regrets the chances missed.
Desire, dormant, hesitates.

Once it is stirred, and wide awake,
delusion stops the renegade.
And yet, the longing still persists.

The stand-off holds, dissolves
and drowns.
A mutual lure reciprocates.

Too Many

Too many mothers
survive their sons.
The sages say
there should be more.

Too many boys
are fatherless sons.
The sages say
there should be more.

Too many sages say
there should be
more orphans and widows.
And their number grows.

Too many childless mothers
bereaved lovers
unborn sons.
Too many sages.

Letters

The most intriguing parts of a letter
are between the lines:
what remains unsaid, withheld, implied;
the hurts, disappointments, intentions.
You fill the blanks with your own illusions,
interpretations.

The real contents of a letter
are between the lines
and just as misleading as the words
half-heartedly shielding
their deceptions.
