Poetry || SubmissionsPoliceman (5 a.m.)By Christopher KendallsTraveling in a squad car through the District of ColumbiaReflections on the meanings of life, law, etc. with a fellow officer "Appointed by god to discourage the dissolution of the law" That made me think I said to him "outside of your job description" "It's not always clear exactly who the law protects" he says back to me He had turned in his badge 6 hours earlier, in retrospect, to think "You're off the clock enjoy it, go home" I say to him "Not everyone does their job and that's where I come in" Yet as far as the system of checks and balances go, who's honest, or not "That's where there's a system of judges and lawyers," I thought "As there are ‘victimless' crimes there are times you don't see me What interests me is embezzlement, forgery, the silent crimes" "Some people think that without the uniform and the gun you're powerless" "The image serves it's purpose it reminds me that I'm not crazy" Never mind the blue, the atf, government agencies; who is it that reacts in the dark? "I was always a policeman in one way or shape or form" he said Never ride with a consciousness police officer if you enjoy ignorance The sun rises and light shines over our seat of government Certainly his peers are going to hate him for being a whistle blower Yet at times our occupations aren't our jobs Our jobs merely serve as the encapsulation and realization Of our purpose in life, what you're going to do anyway, who you are inside Figure he can always find satisfaction in the security of his morality The streets get it twisted where there aren't superheroes or Robocop Just an ordinary man on an extraordinary calling from above.
