Poetry || SubmissionsPoems by John Sweetbeneath the violent light "hope" she says but only to herself and she is smaller now than when i first knew her is lost beneath the violent light of january or is drowning in a sky the color of nothing and who among us will dare approach the sun and demand heat? who will find the strength to save all of the starving children that litter the secret rooms of god? i am a believer in beauty but not compassion ************************ child walking into a busy street it is simple it is so simple it is a child walking into a busy street into the path of a car it is nothing is everything and how many times do you step into the room each night? listen past the confusion of toys past the brightly colored posters for the small and regular breathing? it is simple and it is everything and we are all believers until nothing is left to believe in we are all locking our doors against the future it is already in ************************ numbered after the floods of course there is drought and after that famine and history is not truth most of the missing will never be found there are reasons to believe you are already numbered among them ************************** or or this woman who writes to tell me that i have a heart after all something i'd always suspected but it's still nice to hear ********************** here here in the first rainslick grey of morning i am feeling the grim weight of empty parking lots i am walking with purpose towards the burning house you ran away from twenty years ago no one left inside lives but the flowers in the back yard are saved and you are numbered among them with our newborn child curled up in your cupped hands i know already that he will grow up only to walk away from us both been writing for 19 years now, getting published in the small press for 13, most recently in Thin Coyote, Wavelength, Free Verse and Unlikely Stories. my latest chapbook is Seasons of Rust (Via Dolorosa Press). favorite poet is Margaret Atwood. john sweet Today's Situation
