Poems by Janet Buck

The Boston Elbow

When the magazine arrived
with updates on
prosthetic care, I did that
cosmic hoarsy laugh
(ironical comical
smarmical sin)--
“luxury liners,
custom fit,
speed increased
for little tasks.”

Liberty Technology!
The Boston Elbow
at its best.
They specialized
in hope and help
like doilies laid
on pulsing rain
that travels
severed arteries.
Accessories
were “cushion soft”
and “dishwasher safe.”
Their “independent
living aids” could not
reverse a limb removed
by landmines
coating Bosnia.

Short Salad Forks

Born with blushing
difference,
I've never known
a diving board,
a balance beam,
a trampoline.
Allergic to your
yogurt ease,
I crave it like
a cigarette.
Limbs that touch
like yours French kiss
each time you stop
to cross your legs.
Tell me how
impulsive walking
(minus floor plans of a fall)
conforms to ways
the earth just breathes,
incurring happy as it turns.
Show me how
five working toes
can wiggle
in a tennis shoe.
Struggle seems
like cutting steaks
with nothing but
a salad fork.

Checking Passports

Pecking on a paper wall,
I look at passports
of our lives as tubs of
home-made applesauce
that prove good things
a seed can do.
I found a man
with yellow yolk
unselfishness
who doesn't need
your Lipizzaner luxuries
to witness ways
the moonlight curves.

Doesn't need
a stack of drinks--
lace ballets of wallets full--
hands with bricks
of hollow jewels--
to play his pilot in a storm.
His conscience cleaner
than his car.
We're blessed in ways
we chew our food as if
it were conclusive meals
of cherries from a final tree.
