Four Poems by Hagy Averbuch

Prayers

On a balcony
eating lunch with a friend
The sea breeze salting our bread
closing my eyes for a moment

Thank you for this.

*
My friend asleep in the dark.

Shutters half-shut
thick dew-veils
filtering in
covering mirrors
wrapping -
glistening apples black.

An hour later:

Raising a naked arm
gazing as sunrise stripes it
light-phylacteries.

*
No candles.
No scrolls.

Shabat.

Soon I'll go home and be asked:
"Where did you pray this morning?"
No Synagogue.

Early risen sea.

cool wavelets play with my shadow
moving lips not reflected:
just the human frame.

The shadow of kneeling is formless.
A rock.
Pray like a pebble.

This Haydn Piano concerto
is a sleigh-ride

Airy music
down the hill
gracefully
falling

Escapist finger play
so much hard labour and years of practice
all this for me
to press a button
Ride away from the world

I guess composers got tired
of writing delicate sermons
for this smiling congregation.

"Can I change the music?"
"sure"

Britten's war-requiem

I deserved that lesson.

Parsifal

The lights dimmed
Hermann levi raised his baton

Halted.
The wagner mantra:
You're going to conduct -
my Parsifal
you can't be a jew
submit to baptism.

Thick un-soothing strains
building a temple of music
Blood pounding temples ache
hold on.
First, second, third round
Final bars
Gonging

afterwards
He heard the audience chatting
of their evening entertainment.

He stayed a jew, you know.

To A capricious lover

Walk with me this dusty road a while
Let sunset's screen make silhouettes of us both
and whistling desert wind sing of our lot,
That we have loved..Love, Walk with me a while.

Our kisses, love, had many a backdrop seen
River, forest, waterfall and lake
Our love has left the world its golden wake..
One served as fool, the other - actor been:

Tears and Compassion - were they more than guile -
to keep you from the loneliness you fought?
And friendship, love, oh, did you not defile -
by stressing more than what your heart has taught?

love.. walk with me this dusty road a while
and then walk on, and I shall follow not.
