Poetry || SubmissionsThe Trouble With WinterBy Elaine HeveronIt is not the snow or the cold, not even the wind or the ice. Nor is it the darkness of daybreak or indigo evenings. It isn't the smell of exhaust-- how it blackens the snow, like an insult. It is not the lost glove, or the cold wet sock, when your foot lands too deep into a hollowing snow bank It isn't chapped lips, cracked fingers or skin that begs to be scratched. It is not losing your keys in a darkened white void. It's not even the fear of slipping on ice, breaking your leg or wrecking your car. It isn't the stillness, or having to slow down your life. The trouble with winter is knowing the homeless roam freezing at night as you pull up your blankets and whisper your prayers. C & D Lawn No More Cal died. the plumber told me. Cancer. No one knew he was sick, not even his son Dave. He just kept working till he checked himself into a hospital and died six weeks ago. He stopped buying lawnmowers two years ago; just sold the ones he had-- stopped taking care of the building who knows when-- a hundred holes in the roof junk in the yard, he didn't seem to mind raccoons and cats birthing litters in the back, squirrels playing circus on his roof-- He always said hello had his son mow my lawn, plough the driveway-- I had to ask for a bill He was quiet in life then he slipped out of it silently like the secret that he kept. Elaine Heveron: "I began enjoying and writing poetry in high school. I started keeping journals back in my 20's as a result of some creative writing classes I took back then. In my 50's now, I work full time in corporate research at Xerox, supporting a group of scientists and teaching hatha yoga part time. I have published one 32-page chapbook entitled, Standing Room Only in My Heart, and am working on another. Two of my favorite poets are Naomi Shihab Nye and Li Young Lee. I also enjoy the humorous poet laureate of the US, Billy Collins. My poetry is mostly influenced by the jazz and blues of everyday life. Elaine Heveron lives in Rochester, New York Today's Situation
