Poetry || SubmissionsDebbie Ben-TuraFirst dateour first real datethat January in Tel-Aviv you guided me through a hidden passage to a quaint Greek restaurant in a secluded garden incense of potted geraniums heady seductive privately we sat knee to knee on wrought-iron chairs under fertile vines enticing me with candlelight and heavy retsina the menu like a fan wavering in my hand you were a man I a woman-child flattered that you were more interested in sampling me than the stuffed vine leaves and bite-sized mezedes when you fed me scooping garlic potato spread onto bread between your square fingers I tasted you wanting to lick the lips that laughed so greedily at my jokes my innocent flirtations savoring your flavor conscious that I was inappropriately dressed in corduroy pants and a blue sweater fuzzy with age (my hair needed washing) I frequently raised my water glass to quench my thirst too uncertain to lift my napkin which had fallen like a rag at my feet you kissed the corner of my mouth so unexpectedly so softly so a plump musician an organ grinder's monkey in a waistcoat plucked his bazouki knowing that the spiced lamb stew would grow cold the fresh salad swimming in olive oil would be left uneaten the garlic zagziki would harden the eggplant would remain naked glances stripping each other you signaled for the bill your arm spanning my waist led me out to the street we never did drink coffee Debbie Ben-Tura was born in South Africa, and lived in Rangoon (Yangon), Manila, Athens, and Israel. She is currently working on her M.A. in Creative Writing at Bar Ilan University.
