Travels through Life by Millie Jackson
JASON
You will never know how your life has helped others.
The day I read your poem, I thought my life was over. I can handle other bad things in my life, but never cancer. The word itself can put fear in your heart. I know that it can kill and can take away everything you hold dear. And I like you I couldn't believe this had happened to me, after dealing with a broken hip and surgery and having to lose everything I had worked so hard for. It seemed that I take two steps forward and get sent back three. It was so hard. My energy and shoulder were getting weak with trying to deal with all of it. There were days I just wanted for it to be all over with no more pain and suffering.
People didn't understand and as you said in your poem they didn't want to be bothered with a handicapped person. They are so busy running in life and doing what they think will bring them happiness. It never enters their minds that one day it might be them. They are afraid of us and having to deal with us, and our hurt and handicaps. In truth, I have learned to feel sorry for them. For in us life has taught us so much. It has taught us to be humble and not to expect things in this world and not to build our future here. It also taught me about friendship and true love. Of having to learn to know who to trust and who will just say the words and not mean them. I have to learned who really cares and who doesn't.
Yes, it has been a learning process for me. I had to learn what is really important in life. And it is not what the world has to offer. It's only temporary. I know that we are here to help one another, and that means the handicapped. That God loves us and He didn't cause pain and suffering in this world. I know that the day will come when we will have to give an account for how we live our lives. That He does hold us accountable to Him.
