There is a song that starts, "The road was long and winding too." This song is actually about a truck wreck; but it started with good intentions.

When I started this Southern Journey, I too started out with the best of intentions. Luckily, I didn't have any wrecks, but I did get into many tangles, thinking about the meaning of home in the South and in myself.

Many people helped me along the road. They helped me marvel at, tease, and create even more interesting tangles on the road. My deepest thanks go to the people I met along the road. I owe much to these friends around home: Polly Adema, Tina and Paul Baker, Deborah Boykin, Joey and Eileen Brackner, Erika Brady, Larry Danielson, Tracy Glantz, Henry Glassie, Ray Granade, Tom and Angie Greer, Chris Hamilton, Holly Hamilton, Gregory Hansen, Peggy Johnson, Jon Kay, Phyllis Kline, Dayna Lee, Susan Palmquist, Mary Catherine Reynolds, Wendy Richter, Elaine Thatcher, Electa Wiley, and Patricia Young.
