Established in 1984, IWN's objectives include promoting women into the mainstream of public life in Israel. IWN has brought women's issues to the forefront of public attention by introducing measures designed to improve the status of women. Through litigation, legislation, advocacy, education and consciousness-raising, the IWN addresses the following vital issues: women's representation in government and in all decision-making bodies; women's civic, economic and professional empowerment; leadership training; law and public policy; marriage and divorce; violence; education and health.

IWN's legislative activities include: Prevention of Domestic Violence Law (1991); initiating, drafting and advocating legislation of Amendments to Income Tax Law (1992), Law of Legal Evidence for Rape Victims (1994). IWN also provided legal representation leading to a High Court decision on equality in retirement age (Naomi Nevo vs. the Jewish Agency). IWN has planned and implemented strategies to increase women's representation in all sectors of Israeli society, conducted leadership training courses, and helped ensure the rights of women immigrants by mandating that all rights granted to new immigrants apply equally to both spouses.

IWN works on several on-going, urgent issues: finding a permanent solution to the problem of agunot; increasing the level of equality in the education system; educating and encouraging women to run for public office; and increasing the percentage of women in public and political positions.

IWN also organized and sponsored several national and international meetings including Women's Health in Israel (1991, 1993), Gender Equality in Education (1993), Women in the Israeli Defence Forces (1995), Conference on Arab Women's health, First International Conference of Jewish Feminists (1988), and annual Israeli feminist conferences.

Today's Situation

"The army that will defeat terrorism doesn't wear uniforms, or drive Humvees, or calls in air-strikes. It doesn't have a high command, or high security, or a high budget. The army that can defeat terrorism does battle quietly, clearing minefields and vaccinating children. It undermines military dictatorships and military lobbyists. It subverts sweatshops and special interests.Where people feel powerless, it helps them organize for change, and where people are powerful, it reminds them of their responsibility." ~~~~ Author Unknown ~~~~
