B'Tselem was founded in 1989 by a group of Knesset members, public figures, lawyers, academics, and journalists to protect human rights in the Occupied Territories. The strategies to achieve this goal are as follows: To provide information to the Israeli public and the international community about violations of human rights in the Occupied Territories. To recommend and encourage policy changes to ensure greater protection of human rights. Since its founding, B'Tselem has earned international recognition as the leading Israeli organization monitoring, documenting and advocating to improve the human rights situation in the Occupied Territories. It has issued over 60 publications which have generated extensive media coverage both in Israel and internationally. B'Tselem serves as a leading source of information about human rights in the territories. Quantitative and qualitative data is compiled from B'Tselem's fieldwork, government sources and the Israeli, Palestinian and international press. Regular data summaries are distributed to the media and other interested parties. In addition, B'Tselem responds to queries from Knesset members, government committees, researchers, students and the media. It also provides human rights briefings to visiting foreign delegations and members of the diplomatic community. B'Tselem also conducts public education and organizes advocacy campaigns.

Today's Situation

"The army that will defeat terrorism doesn't wear uniforms, or drive Humvees, or calls in air-strikes. It doesn't have a high command, or high security, or a high budget. The army that can defeat terrorism does battle quietly, clearing minefields and vaccinating children. It undermines military dictatorships and military lobbyists. It subverts sweatshops and special interests.Where people feel powerless, it helps them organize for change, and where people are powerful, it reminds them of their responsibility." ~~~~ Author Unknown ~~~~
