Established in 1991 to promote greater equality between
social groups in Israel, the Center's activities include
research and publication, advocacy and public education. Adva
Center initiates policy analysis and undertakes policy studies
for voluntary organizations and local governments and brings theresults
of its research to policy-makers via The Israel Equality Monitor.
The Israel Equality Monitor is published in Hebrew, Arabic and
English and presents up-to-date information on education, health
services, welfare and housing and with respect to these services
compares women and men, Arabs and Jews, and the members of different
Jewish ethnic groups. The Israel Equality Monitor provides grassroots
organizations which lack the time, resources and research capacity
to produce hard figures with the information they need to promote
their causes.
Adva researchers and Board members are regularly
invited to testify before Parliamentary committees and other national
and local bodies. Each year, Adva analyzes the social implications
of the state budget and publishes its findings in Looking at the
Budget. Adva also provides local governments with the comparative
statistics that they might know how they rank nationally with
respect to each other. Adva Center also publishes position papers
on equity issues in the areas of education, health and housing.
These papers are widely distributed and reach a variety of publics
such as policy makers, social activists, journalists and scholars.
Adva organizes conferences and other educational
programs on equity issues for parents, students, and the general
public in an effort to stimulate debate. Adva cooperates with
other organizations like the Worker's Hotline for the Protection
of Worker's Rights, the Israel Committee on Education in
Mizrahi Neighborhoods and Development Towns, and The Galilee Society
for Social Research.
In 1996, Adva is focusing on such issues as Bedouin
education, high school education in Palestinian communities in
Israel, unequal chances for higher education and the social implications
of the structure of the state budget for the 1997 fiscal year.
Recent achievements include stimulating public debate on multiculturalism
and on the state budget; coalition-building on equity issues in
education and on women's health issues; conferences and
symposia on a variety of equality-related issues.
"The army that will defeat terrorism doesn't wear uniforms, or drive
Humvees, or calls in air-strikes. It doesn't have a high command, or
high security, or a high budget. The army that can defeat terrorism
does battle quietly, clearing minefields and vaccinating children. It
undermines military dictatorships and military lobbyists. It subverts
sweatshops and special interests.Where people feel powerless, it
helps them organize for change, and where people are powerful, it
reminds them of their responsibility." ~~~~ Author Unknown ~~~~
