Andre Brutmann Press Photographer

Camels in Jerusalem photo by Andre Brutmann

With shock and sadness we announce the passing of Andre Brutmann, press photographer, husband, father, and friend.

Andre Brutmann by David Rubinger Andre was not the greatest photographer in the world but he was two things that are far more important in the news business -- he was consistent and a tue bon vivant.

Covering wars, suffering, pain, the helplessness of being a victim (particularly when both sides in the conflict feel victimized), takes a special kind of soul to remain sympathetic to both and at the same time see through the hypocrisy and the way suffering gets exploited, all the while being able to find a reason for a smile, a joke, a way of seeing that even when life itself comes to an end, somehow, some of that life continues, whether through families or friends or the inspiration that a death can sometimes create.

Andre had that special talent. He knew to never to take himself too seriously, no matter how serious the story, and he knew how to enjoy life in the sense to he knew that pain, indeed suffering, is part of what life has to offer for us. It is a tragic loss, not only because he was so young, but because there are too few like him in the news business -- helpful, considerate, and generous. His memory is blessed.

Andre passed away on October 16 during a transplant operation in Philadelphia.
