5759 BREAK THE SILENCE IS GLAD TO ENCOURAGE ACTION IN SUPPORT OF PEACE AT THIS CRUCIAL PERIOD. On Sunday evening, November 22, 1998, the U.S. Interreligious Committee for Peace in the Middle East will sponsor a National Interfaith Convocation, "Bless Peacemaking: Don't Let the Light Go Out," at Foundry United Methodist Church, 1500 16th Street, NW (where the Clintons worship) in Washington, D.C. During the last year groups who are narrowly partisan and/or opposed to the Peace Process have been much more vocal and effective in Washington than majorities who support peace. This historic interfaith gathering aims to demonstrate majority support among American Christians, Jews, and Muslims for an active, determined U.S. role to help Israel and the Arab parties complete the Peace Process, including negotiated, mutually acceptable solutions for Jerusalem and all of the Permanent Status issues. Interfaith delegations are being invited to participate from 25-30 cities, to use this national event as a springboard for greater local activity. The program, scheduled from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, will feature addresses by Shlomo Lahat, Mayor of Tel Aviv 1973-93 and President of the Council for Peace and Security (retired senior Israeli military officers who support the Peace Process), and Nabil Shaath, Minister of Economy and Planning, Palestinian Authority and former Chairman of the PLO Political Commission. Prominent American Jewish, Christian and Muslim leaders will participate, including Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg, Rabbi Lennard R. Thal, Rabbi Seymour Essrog, The Reverend Joan B. Campbell, Most Reverend Theodore E. McCarrick, Dawud Assad and Atif Harden. Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul & Mary) will perform. Prayers for Peace will be offered by Arab and Jewish children. A workshop on Interfaith Organizing for Peace will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at Foundry United Methodist Church, especially for interfaith teams from other cities and persons in the D.C. Metro area interested in this approach. (If you are interested in attending the workshop, please call or e-mail Ron Young at the U.S. Interreligious Committee.) I am especally concerned that this invitation be publicized and persons invited to participate from every church, mosque and synagogue in the D.C. Metro Area, including the Maryland and Virginia suburbs. (8.5"x11" flyers; 4.25"x5.5" program inserts and 17"x11" posters are available.) Call or e-mail the U.S. Committee. Reserve the Date - Nov 22 * Spread the Word Sunday evening, November 22, 1998 <3>
