January 2000 Jan 24 2000 Dukium means coexistence, and it's the name of a new web site at Ariga, The Negev Coexistence Forum: "The forum was established to confront in a social and responsible way the many common problems confronting the inhabitants of the Negev region in Southern Israel. We wish to replace the atmosphere of tension and suspicion with cooperation and understanding. The Forum is a framework for Jewish-Arab cooperation, joint struggle for equal civil rights, recognition of unrecognized Beduin villages, education for tolerance and mutual understanding. Ariga is proud to host their web site at http://www.ariga.com/dukium They promise to update it regularly, so bookmark their pages. The latest issue of The Sleeping Giant:, an international online resource detailing the intensifying threat of non-conventional terrorism from transnational groups and rogue nations, is now in the air. Check it out for * Italy to Help Russia in Eliminating Chemical Weapons * Israel to lift lid on its policy * Delhi, US team up to tackle terrorism * DoD Helps Hometown USA Confront Terrorism * Biological terrorism: A threat overlooked * State police to monitor evaluation of emergency preparedness plan * Terrorism-response teams in works: Ohio, Ky. to field special Guard units * Workers 'poisoned' at nerve gas base * All Weapons Great and Small * Security Council Stalling on Iraq * IRAQ NEWS * Ministry Denies Use of Chemical Weapons in Chechnya. * Battle Over Plum Island * Clinton to Seek $340 Mln for Animal Disease Study * China Sees Stable Korean Peninsula as Vital to Regional Peace * Korean Peninsula Nukes Opposed * Marine who Refused Anthrax Shots Given Honorable Discharge Jan 16 2000 Here's a new site that Ariga recommends, mostly because we love Tel Aviv. http://www.telaviv-insider.co.il is a good straightforward guide to the city, in English, with lots of background info, a good map, and plenty of information about where to go and when, in the city that never sleeps. (At least almost never). On November 16th, 1999, hundreds of residents of the villages of Mufkarah, Tuba and Jinba, among others, were expelled from their homes in the Southern Har Hebron region. These Palestinians had been living in caves and shacks for decades, making a living off of agriculture and sheep herding. According to the media, this eviction took place as part of an agreement between the IDF and the Yesha Council of Judea, Samaria and Gaza. The expulsion of Palestinians from the caves and shacks was apparently connected to the eviction of the settlers from Ma'on. Since November, the deportees have been dwelling with their herds in surrounding villages, living in tents under harsh conditions and waiting to be returned to the villages from which they were forced to leave. B'Tselem, like other organizations, requests the return of the deportees and their children to their homes. On Friday the 21st of January, the eve of Tu Bishvat, we will set out to meet with the deportees, and will return with them to their homes and plant olive trees together. Buses will leave from: the Arlozorov train station in Tel Aviv at 8:30 B'Tselem's office, at 43 Emek Refaim St. in Jerusalem at 9:30 Please confirm your participation: 02-5617271, 02-5637312 B'Tselem is The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories and the leading Israeli organization monitoring, documenting and advocating to improve the human rights situation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Founded in 1989, B'Tselem publishes reports, engages in advocacy and serves as a resource center. http://www.btselem.org Jan 5 2000
