December 1999

Christmas Day
  • From LabourStart - http://www.labourstart.org : Few industries are as globalized as the media and nothing has made this clearer in recent days than the heroic struggles being waged in Calgary, Canada and Jerusalem, Israel by employees of the same company, headed by the same media magnate -- Conrad Black.
Tomorrow, Christmas Day, employees of both newspapers will find themselves once again walking the picket line. The same picket line, though separated by thousands of kilometers.
Jerusalem Post journalists have been told that their collective bargaining agreement is null and void as of 31 December 1999. The Post management is refusing to negotiate. For details on their struggle, visit The Jerusalem Ghost, their online newspaper: at http://www.jerusalemghost.cjb.net/
Striking workers at the Calgary Herald have set up their website here: http://www.heraldunion.com/index2.html Their struggle is being fully supported by the Canadian Labour Congress, which has called for a boycott of Black's National Post newspaper.
To send messages of support -- badly needed during this holiday season -- use these links: Calgary Herald: http://www.heraldunion.com/disc1_frm.htm
    Jerusalem Post: Write to webmaster@jerusalemghost.cjb.net

Last but not least, let's tell Conrad Black what we think of his anti-union policies in Calgary and Jerusalem -- write directly to him at: blackc@telegraph.co.uk It's not a lot to do -- just a couple of email messages -- but it means a lot.
