October 1997 at Ariga

October 28 1997 Sheikh Abdullah Nimer Darwish Sheikh Abdullah Nimer Darwish is the leader of the Israeli Arab Islamic Movement, abnd was interviewed by Dr. Aaron Lerner of IMRA. It's an interesting interview because in it Darwish seems to imply that any peace agreement between Israel and the Arabs is always going to be subject for reappraisal by future generations. Lerner, a good journalist with a right-wing slant, seesm to take that to mean that therefore any peace agreement with the Islamicists won't be long-lasting, while Darwish seems to suggest that it means that as long as the peace agreement is fair, there's no reason why it couldn't last. Judge for yourself October 28 1997 Stock Market Crash -- From Omer Shvilli of the Ariga Portfolio The 10 percent drop on Wall Street was long expected -- and wanted -- by many analysts. While our portfolio was hit hard, in particular due to a fall in the price of NICE, we are using the fall as an oportunity to buy... It was the time of the intifada, a season of hatred and fear in the city called Jerusalem, the City of Peace... Criminal Investigations Department Commander Avram Cohen is one of the watchmen at its gates, barring them to criminals and the insane. One man, who is either--or both--slips past and in the midst of chaos commits a terrible double murder. Slaughtered are two Russian nuns, mother and daughter, members of the Russian Orthodox convent in Ein Kerem. Tothe First Chapter of Crimes of the City October 22 1997 David Tartakover said this week, "The Torah is happy, we're not." Personally, given the choice between NASA and the Rav Kadouri, I prefer the scientists when it comes to explanations of the stars. I happen to think that's the Jewish way. How much does it cost? October 10 1997 Jews and Palestinians Building a Common Future
by Lionel Traubman and Nahida Salem
A Jewish dentist and a Palestinian businesswoman, we with others in our five-year-old Jewish-Palestinian Living Room Dialogue Group have learned a lot about reconciliation. And we know it isn't easy. But after 57 meetings, we have moved from fear to trust, from alienation to cooperation. We can talk. We can listen. We can cooperate. And if we can do it, so can others. To the rest of the article October 10 1997 Reflections on Past Yom Kippurs Originally published exactly ten years ago in Tel Aviv, Tel Aviv in the old Jerusalem Post: These are some of the unexpected or expected things that happen on or about Yom Kippur in recent memory. Memory being as short as it is nowadays, this chronicle deliberately begins a year after the only Yom Kippur that is remembered by those who happened to be here in that year - 1973. October 7 1997 Palestinian Authority-Repression and Intimidation in Self-rule Areas -- From Human Rights Watch The first three years of Palestinian self-rule have been characterized by widespread arbitrary and abusive conduct by the Palestinian Authority (PA) and its mushrooming security agencies, according to Human Rights under the Palestinian Authority, released today by Human Rights Watch/Middle East. October 7 1997The Peace Offensive: Some Thoughts on an Anti-Terrorism Strategy "The peace offensive can be viewed as a strategy like any other. If terrorism is the enemy of peace, then peace must be used as a weapon against terrorism. Only by reinforcing the ongoing development of peaceful cooperation and coexistence can the terrorist factions be rendered impotent in achieving their ends."
A remarkable essay for its understanding that the most pragmatic approach is the most peaceful. To the full article called The Peace Offensive: Some Thoughts on an Anti-Terrorism Strategy by Janina Frankel. October 5 1997 Over the Next Hill Since our statesmen cannot be expected to tax their brains on matters of little consequence until after the elections, it behooves the rank and file citizens to volunteer to deal with secondary issues such as a final settlement with our neighbors. As far as I know, the formula for a final settlement presented here has not yet been put forward. The innovation is not in any of the components, but in the conception that the final settlement must apply not only to relations between the State of Israel and the Palestinian "entity," but also to the overall structure of relations between Jews and Arabs in the Land of Israel. That is to say, anticipating what is to follow, it must also apply to relations within the State of Israel. The solution presented here attempts to be simple and symmetric. It is simple, because only a simple solution can have stability, as required by the notion of a final settlement. A solution based on medusa-shaped maps, enclaves, fences, and bypass roads is a sure prescription for friction. A Proposal for a Permanent Settlement by Yoram Sade: A new formula for a final status settlement with our Palestinian neighbors in this Land.
